Spiritual discourse

The basis of various practices and paths to self-knowledge is one's association with great people, and it is only through their talks and discourses that the path to self-realisation becomes easy for the seekers.

Everyone in the world seeks happiness. Not knowing where it lies, we end up getting deeply stuck in unhappiness. For some, happiness lies in money, for others in one's offspring, power, property, fame, gourmet food, art and knowledge. But in fact we can never find contentment in these worldly possessions or relations. Even temporary self-control and avoidance of temptations for various sensations and things will not lead to contentment. The worldly desires only end forever when we realise the truth and experience the Eternal. Meditation, spiritual knowledge, and an unbroken remembrance can eliminate our ignorance.

How can we find lasting peace and happiness from a transient world giving temporary pleasures. Thinking and desiring worldly things only lead to bondage, sorrow and repeated births. Whereas thinking and aspiring for the indestructible, eternal reality will result in unending bliss and liberation from attachments to the material things and relations. This is the Nature's timeless principle.

To attain lasting bliss and love we should seek the source which is God or Eternal reality. An unwavering faith and devotion is required to follow one of the countless methods or paths for self-realization. This can only become possible with the grace and the company of saints and a guru or teacher. Therefore, satsang or association with devotees and guru is the main requisite for the goal to attain Bliss. The people we associate with have deep impact on us.

Satsang (association, sang; sat, truth) is when we perform actions and behave according to the sayings of religious texts and of great people, when we visit saints or great personalities, paying obeisance to them, listening to them, and deliberating on what we have read in spiritual texts. Through satsang, we get transformed and start understanding our true blissful nature that helps us to cross this ocean of suffering and liberate us from the unending cycle of births and deaths.

However, it is very difficult to have satsang, and to have a spiritual teacher or guru is even more so and can happen only through the grace of God. Vibhishan said when he met Hanuman:
अब भा भरोस मोहि हनुमन्ता ।
बिनु हरि कृपा मिले नहिं संता ॥

Devarishi Narad says in Narad Bhakti Sutra:

महत्स्गस्तु दुर्लभोअग्म्योमोधश्च ।

The company of holy men and women is rare, unreachable and infallible. It can be had only with God's grace because there is no difference between god and His devotees.

Sri Krishna says in Srimad Bhagvad:

साधवो हृदयं मह्यं साधूनां ह्रदयं त्वहम् ।
मदन्यत्तेन जानन्ति नाहं तेभ्यो मनागपि ॥

'The saints are my heart and I am theirs. They do not anything else except me and I do not know anything except them.'

In fact, we start understanding the value of satsang and seek the shelter of God only by the grace of saints. Brahma says in Srimad Bhagvad, 'Jeeva (human beings) are subject to pain, pleasure, fear, anguish, greed, grief due to their attachment to money, relations, home etc. and only until they do not take refuge in God and consider themselves mere physical bodies appropriating the worldly things as their 'own'. This 'mine-ness' is the sole cause of their suffering.'

As soon as we consider God to be our everything, He takes our responsibility. Therefore, our supreme gain is attaining God.

Sri Krishna says in Srimad Bhagvat Puran:

सर्व धर्मान्परित्यज्य मामेकं शरणं व्रज ।
अहंत्वा सर्व पापेभ्यो मोक्षयिष्यामि मा शुचः ॥

Give up all wasteful activities and come in my shelter. Do not worry, I will liberate you from all your sins.

Narad Muni says in Narad Bhakti Sutra:

सुख दुःखेच्छा लाभादित्यक्ते काले
प्रतीक्ष्यमाने क्षणाद्धर्मपि व्यर्थ न नेयम् ।

Do not waste even a single moment without singing Lord's praises waiting for the total eradication of pain, pleasure, desire, gain etc.

Sri Shankracharya says:

Ques: What is extremely poisonous among all types of sense-gratifications?

Ans:  All the worldly sense-gratifications.

How can I forsake those who have renounced all the sense-gratifications of this world and are established in my devotion.

Saint Kabir says:

Do not waste a single moment or even the half of a moment in seeking the company of a saint whose association will purify your mind  and eradicate all your sins. There should be complete faith in the Guru or spiritual teacher, because it is through the grace of Guru that one can cross this ocean of life. Only a washer-man like a guru can clean the dirt of this cloth called the mind and thus purify it. As Meera says:

One should adopt any path to realise God and follow it daily wearing the devotional jewellery of the love  of God. Meera says:

God showers His grace on them who surrender to Him taking only His shelter. Not only this, He even says that he is bound by
vow to do so, as:

जो जन ऊधो मोहि न बिसारे, ताहि ना बिसारुं पल पाव घड़ी रे ।
वो मेरा मैं उनका रे ऊधो , भक्त काज मै देह धरि रे ॥

Associating with saints (satsang) was the main part of Meera's spiritual practices and she forsake worldly customs for this. Whatever she learnt and gained from satsang she had put forth in her verses. She wrote many poems on spiritual knowledge, yoga, and devotion.

Meera's Poems on Divine Love or Brajbhav

Meerabai's whole life was dedicated to this Brajras. Not only this, she considered herself to be a Gopi from the past life and also wrote many verses thinking herself to be Radha, the beloved of Krishna. She took herself to be Krishna's servant from innumerable lives and had bought Krishna from the bowers of Vrindavan!! What remains to be said or done after that?  Life’s primary goal to remain immersed in Divine love has been accomplished.
In this section we will see Meerabai's poems on Brajbhav or Sri Krishna' Raas Leela and His meeting with Sri Radha and Gopis. In all her poems, Braj is situated in her heart.

The Glory of Vrindavan

1.

My friend, I love Vrindavan!
where Tulsi is worshipped in every home
you see Thakurji everywhere.
Pure waters of Jamuna flow and
food of milk and curd.
There He graces a gem-studded throne
adorning a Tulsi crown.
In groves and bowers Radha walks
drawn to the melodious flute.
Meera's lord is Giridhar Nagar
without devotion life is dull.

2.

I feel like wandering looking for Gopal.
Looking at Him all the time
I feel so helpless!
Like Him, I will carry a baton and flute
wearing yellow clothes.
I will take the form of a bird,
or of His crown, or will graze with the cows.
In the nights of Vrindavan
I will be a vine of flowers,
and will listen to the sounds of
the birds, animals, monkeys and saints.
My guru said it is tough, but why?
Meera has found her Giridhar
and she will be with Him forever!

3.

O Hari! Why did we love?
You have no idea, your love has
only given me immense pain.
You abandoned Gokul to live in Mathura.
What was so great about that?
Meera's Lord is Giridhar Nagar,
I cry out for you, O' Nand.

4.

Akrur Leela - (when Akrur took Kanha to Mathura)

O friend! my shame became my enemy!
Why did I not go with Sri Lal Gopal?
That cruel cruel Akrur came
riding a newly adorned carriage.
He took Gopal in it, and
I stood there tight fisted!
My Shyam left us with a heavy heart
I cannot bear this separation!
Meera is Giridhar Nagar's maid
why did I not break down with grief?

5.

You have left the bowers and groves,
which is so unbecoming of you.
If I were a fish in waters,
I would have touched your feet
when you came for a bath.
If I were a cuckoo in the woodlands
I would have listened to you when
you came to graze the cows.
If I were a feather of a peacock,
I would have adorned the crown on your head, Madho.
If I were a pearl in a shell,
I would have stayed on your heart
in the garland you wear, O Madho!
If I were a bamboo stick
I would have stayed on your lips
and drank their nectar
in the form of the flute, O Madho!
If you want to meet me, O' Meera's Ghanshyam,
I am dying to see you too, O' Madho!

6.

Prankster Kanha -  (In this poem Krishna is teasing Radha. Radha objects and asks Krishan to stay away. Multiple expressions , from denial to desire, from teasing to shame, have been beautifully expressed.)

Don't clutch my arms, Kanha!
I am someone else's lass,
do not depend on me, O Gopal!.
You can twist my arms, but,
do not take my life away by gazing into my eyes.
In the groves of Vrindavan,
do not give up etiquettes and conduct wilfully.
Meera's God is Giridhar Nagar,
place His lotus feet in your heart
without any delay.

7.

Gopi-Bhav (in the words of Gopi)

Kanha, do not forget me, I have no one but you.
We love each other, visit me day and night.
I live far away from you, do not stay away
from me, thinking I am with you.
My home has Tulsi sapling
bearing lush leaves;
the sun rises on my doorstep, and
in the courtyard there is a sandalwood tree.
People can say whatever they like,
do not listen to them and hesitate.
You are in each heart, and know everything.
Do not abandon the one you love.
If you still can't find my village,
know that my house is in Barsana.
Meera is deeply in love with her lord,
it hurts her deeply..

8.

I can't close my eyelids without Shyam.
Mathura seems deserted without Hari,
as the night without the moon.
I looked for Him everywhere,
every nook and corner of Vrindavan.
I will be a wandering hermit for my beloved
for my beloved, go singing to every house.
Bai Meera's Giridar Nagar
a pupil at His  lotus feet.

9.

O' Kanha! How can I come to your Braj, to your Gokul town?
Mathura's here and Gokul's there and Yamuna flows in between.
If I step forward, my anklets get wet,
and if I jump in I will be drowned.
How shall I come to your Gokul city?
I went Vrindavan to sell the curd,
and had a tiff with Mohan on the way.

Yashoda chasten you Lal, he snatched my nose-ring.

Don't lie!! O cow-girls, Kanha is alone, you many.
My Kanhaiya is only five, you are crazy ladies.
Go and ask the king Kans, there is no justice in the Gokul town.

He twisted Radha's arm and
quarrelled in the streets of Vrindavan!
Meera's lord is Giridhar Nagar,
we are honest, associate with saints.

10.

Passion of Gopi (Gopi bhav to serve)

Syam, keep me as your servant,
O' Giridharlal have me as a servant!
As a servant, I will tend your gardens
so that I can see your at every dawn.
I will sing your pastimes in the streets
and groves of Vrindavan.
Serving you, I will see you all the time
your thoughts will be my salary, and have
a passionate devotion as my treasure
all three things are fabulous!
A peacock-feathered crown
becomes you.
Adorning a garland of Vaijyanti
Mohan, the flute-player, herds the cows.
I will have a big palace with windows built
so that I can meet my Sanwariya,
wearing flowery saari.
There hermits will come to pine for you
and dispassionate will do their penances,
devotees will sing your glories
and so will do the people of Vrindavan.
Meera's lord is very mysterious
please stay in my heart, O shrewd one!
Lord shows up at midnight on the bank of Jamunaji.

11.

Fly away! O crow of the woods,
my Shyam has been away for a long time.
I will meet my Ram if you fly away,
putting rest to all my doubts.
Gokul is here and Mathura is far away
Hari is very hard-hearted
He goes and settles in Dwarka,
while we live in Madhuban.
Meera's lord is the Indestrutible Hari
I take shelter of the devotees of Hari.

Living your Love - the Brajbhav

Those who have devoted themselves to Sri Krishna, it is essential for them to adopt brajbhav which is replete with bliss, peace, love and grace. Meditating on the philosophical import of the glory of Braj, the nobility of Sri Radha and Gopis, the grandeur and secret of Sri Krishna's descension, divine love sprouts in the heart of devotees that is called Brajbhav. Therefore it is essential to understand Brajbhav we need to reflect on all these carefully.

Sri Krishna says to Uddhav, 'Uddho, I cannot forget Braj.'

Worshipping and remembering the sweet pastimes of Sri Krishna in Braj is called Brajbhav. The eighty four kos (168 miles approx.) area of Sri Mathura and Sri Vrindavan is considered as the land of Braj. Braj has a unique significance for India. The trees, vines, leaves, grass, villages, forests, hills and the dust of Braj has the primordial force that enlivens the pastimes of supreme player Sri Krishna and instils divine love in the heart of the devotees. In fact, the Ras panchadhyayi or the five chapters of the tenth canto of Srimad Bhagvat puran written by Sri Ved Vyas, set the scene for a deoiction of divine love. Even among these five chapters, the third chapter where the women of Braj sing what is called 'Gopi Geet' or the song of the Gopis, this song summarises the essenceof Brajbahv or divine love.

According to saints only by merits earned from past lives that one can experience the Brajbhav and get to 'live' in Braj.

Even the creator, Brahma, wishes to be born in Braj even if it is to be an insect, moth or any other creature. In fact the only life worth having is to take birth in Braj and always sing 'Radha-Krishna'.

The Braj has a boundless grandeur where the formless, attribute-less God takes Form to stage a divine show. Therefore, if we wish to attain Sri Radha-Raman, Sri Banke-Bihari, Gopinaath, Sri Govardhandhari, Madan Mohan, then we must take refuge in the groves of Braj, as we can only meet Him in Sri Vrindavan. What do we have to do with a Formless One outside Vrindavan? Our darling, who incarnates as a Gop or cow-herder, who steals butter, runs after women, son of Yahoda and Nand, friend of cow-boys, Radha-Mohan, the immanent resident of woodlands, Sri Krishna resides only in Vrindavan. Dear Sri Krishna never leaves Vrindavan.

'वृन्दावनं परित्यज्य पादमेकं न गच्छति '

The poor Nirvana can only find a solace here, as it says

Supremely blessed is this Brajra (the dust of Braj) as it is the dwelling place of God. Whether one does spiritual practices or not when in Braj, just merely having an unwavering faith in its significance is a blessing in itself. Attaining moksha or liberation from the cycle of repeated births is nothing compared to this blessedness. However if one combines devotion and spiritual endeavour with it then one experiences increasing bliss and divine love that is the supreme purpose of human life.

In fact, Braj is the home of the personification of love, Sri Krishna. There His sovereignty does not have any place. Showing His mouth to Yashoda, meeting Akarur while taking a bath in the Yamuna, lifting Govardhan, while playing with cow-herders, and on other occasions too He performed many miracles but no one paid any special attention to them, nor did anyone prayed to Him in times of need, showed any signs of repentance or surrender to Him. On the contrary, He enjoyed being called Kanua, the dark one, Lala or the little one, the thief, the naughty one, crafty, stubborn and other words of affectionate abuse by gopis and others.

The ease and comfort that Shyam Sundar enjoys in Braj, He cannot have outside. Outside Braj he has to hear the dire requests and wishes of people and establish the law and order to run this world. He can get love and affection only in Braj where He can have a sound and blissful sleep. The entire Braj is filled with the marks of Krishna's feet. Owing to herding the cows and playing with his fellow cowherdering gangs, the soil of Braj has become the imbued with his love as Krishna does not wear anything on his feet. He finds joy in being defeated by his friends in Braj and likes being called their friend, as

The secret of the Descension of Sri Krishna

We have seen that most of the great men and women excel in a particular field of religion, politics, art, humanitarian goals, sports, power, etc. It is very rare to find someone who is master in all the different areas and possesses all the desired and unimaginable attributes and virtues having achieved personal potential to its highest possibilities, who has authority on all the subjects and inspires every field of human endeavour. All this became true in the form of Sri Krishna. Therefore he has been called a complete avatar or incarnation, one who is supreme man or purushottam. In Him, a devotee found the realisation of her devotional form. In Sri Krishna, the universal and immanent formless (nirakar brahm) and the form (sakar brahm) united and found expression. This is the secret of His descension.

When He descended, the demons called Kans, Jarasandh, Bhomasur, Kalyavan, Prondruk, Dantvakr, Shishupal, Shalv, and Kaurav etc were rulers and were tormenting their subjects. Sri Krishna defeated them using His intellect, art of arms, virtues, and supreme abilities and spread peace and happiness among people establishing the reign of righteousness.

For the betterment of the world, Sri Krishna put forward His message in Geeta, according to which the purpose of human life is not to indulge in sense-gratification which is the cause of suffering. The aim of life is to realize Truth or God, the only goal worth seeking that can bring about peace, happiness and well-being. By following the paths of knowledge, dedicated action, and devotion we can realize this Truth and see the permanence in the transitory, eternal in the short-lived. To achieve this, we do not have to give up action or renounce the world. One should not be attached to the results of actions. Following our duties in a given context, we should perform them with total honesty and to the utmost of our abilities.  The reason for our sorrows is the attachement or Asakti. Therefore we should do our duties without any attachment or personal motive. This is the only way to lead a happy life.

God accepts whatever we offer Him in the way of devotion. Sri Krishna teaches us to surrender whatever we do, eat, donate or earn to Him, as this will lead to liberation from bondage of karma. The act of surrendering attaches us to our true source, Krishna and we will make progress on the path of devotion. This is the essence of Geeta, teaching Karma yoga or the path of action to experience union with the One. So that people do not get entangled in this changing and short-lived material world of Maya or relative reality, He instructed us in the path of knowledge in Srimad Bhagvat, which summarises eternal truth of Vedas and Upanishads in simple terms. This is Sri Krishna's invaluable, spiritual, and extraordinary contribution to the world.

Despite having the supreme powers and unlimited opulence, Sri Krishna led a simple life of a humble villager. He herded cows and moved among cow herder boys. His loved eating freshly churned butter, and using His brilliant wrestling skills defeated many demons effortlessly. He killed Kans and gave the kingdom to Ugrasen, played Rasa or danced with gopis in woodlands (nikunj) to grace them with spiritual bliss, while remaining untouched (achyut, अच्युत)  by all this. Although He was an inspiration behind all the actions, He remained unattached and became the exemplary charioteer for Arjun in the war. Such a great philosopher, politician, and valiant Sri Krishna was the true king of all the states and of Mahabharat.

He lovingly ate saag (spinach) and banana skin at Vidur's home and rice flakes from Sudama, dispelling his poverty and gave him all the riches. Krishna helped Draupadi by restoring her honour. By killing Bhomasur Krishna saved 16,100 princesses from prison, who ultimately married Krishna whom they considered to be their befitting consort and who no one else would accept as they had been captured by a demon.

Thus, His every action and thought of Sri Krishna was for the welfare of humanity.

                                                The Glory of Sri Radha

My salutaions to Sri Radhika who resides in the bowers of Vraj (vraj nikunj) without whose grace no one can know Krishna.

The metaphysics of Sri Radha principle is transcendental and endless which can not be understood by mere intellect or by undergoing penances and yogic practices. Only those who have surrendered themselves completely- mind, body and soul- due to their undying love and incessant devotion, receive the grace to experience an iota of this mystical world. And the dawning of love is also dependent on Sri Radha's grace. We can only love and to pray ceaselessly. Who will receive their grace, when and how much, depends on Sri Radha-Shyam.

It has been said in the Sakanda Puran:

आत्मा तु राधिका तस्य तयैव रमणदसौ ।
आत्माराम तया प्राज्ञे: प्रोच्यते गूढ़ वेदिभिः ॥

Sri Krishna always abides in His Self. That is why He is called the Self-sufficient or Atmaaram (आत्माराम ). Sri Krishna is God. His soul is Sri Radhika. Sri Radha is Sri Krishna's beloved. As the space is related to the pot so is Sri Radha related to Sri Krishna. There is no distinction between the two except of that of name, because it is only due to the difference of names that the appearance is possible. Jaydev, the Bengali poet, through his treatise 'Geet Govind', has made it possible for us to visualise and worship the pair of Radha-Krishna. With Geet Govind, Jayadev inspired generations of Radha-Krishna devotees to drink the nectar of Radha-Krishna's love.  Radha is reinvented as the epitome of supreme, sweet and tender principle of divine love in Geet Govind. In Vedic texts like Srimad Bhagvat, Brahmvrat puran, and Lila Shuk, the enchanting stories and descriptions of Sri Krishna, Gopis and Radha, Sri Radha of the 'Geet Govind' is unique, uncanny and an endless treasure of dual love (युगल प्रेम ) sweetness of divine play.

Perennially beholding Sri Krishna, Radha herself becomes Sri Krishna, and Radha whose lotus feet Sri Krishna washes with His own hands, thinking of such ambrosial love, devotees get enthralled and ecstatic. Meera, too, became drunk with this nectar of divine love as she too have read Geet Govind before leaving Mevar.

In truth, without Sri Radha, Sri Krishna is incomplete. The complexity of Brajbhav is Sri Radha. Without primordial energy (प्रकृति ), consciousness (पुरुष ) is inert.

The Glory of Sri Braj- Gopi

The culmination of love is when the mind stops wandering in material world and is only aware of the Beloved. Gopi love had reached this state of being. Gopis were Krishna and Krishna was Gopis, Every moment, Gopis only dreamed of Krishna and only heard the sweet tunes of His flute. Due to the knowledge gained in previous lives, Gopis knew that the only goal and principle of life is Sri Krishna. He is the sole well-wisher of living beings. They knew that mother, father, sibling, friend, husband, everything is Krishna. He is the only one worth attaining. Gopis considered Him their beloved and loved Him with their hearts, words, deeds.

Lord Krishna has Himself said this about Gopis:

'Dear Arjun, Gopis take care of their physical bodies so that they can serve me. Except Gopis, there is no one else who is more deserving of my mystical love. They are my assistants, teachers, students, servants, brothers, beloved, they are everything for me! To tell you the truth, what Gopis are not for me? Hey Arjun, only they know about my grandeur, my wish, my worship and reverence.'

Sri Krishna personally said to Uddhav one day: 'Dear Uddhav, Gopis have completely surrendered themselves to me. Having given up their worldly relations and all the material pleasures, they are only concerned about me. I am the reason for their existence and happiness.  I am dear to those ladies of Gokul. Being separated from me, they are going through throes of agony and dispassion. Their lives depend upon a reassurance from me that I will soon visit them.

Those Gopis who while milking the cows, grinding the grains, making curd, painting the courtyards, cradling the babies, singing lullabies, cleaning the house, only sing with tears and devotion about me. I am grateful to them for their total dedication to me. He further says,

'O dear ones, you have served me breaking the strict rules of society. I can never repay you even with a life as long as of gods. Only you can release me of your debt with your benevolence.'

I follow them to sanctify myself with the dust of their feet!

Besides being beloved of Krishna and His ardent devotees, the Gopis were very clever and playful too. When Krishna stopped one of them on their way, a Gopi answers with such a joviality and poignancy. Through Gopis, Uddhav experiences of a stupendous world of sentiments and love. He forgets his knowledge of Yoga philosophy and learns the philosophy of divine love.

Having absorbed in that love, Uddhav accepted staying in Braj forever. He forgot his knowledge of the Formless reality and dancing with love he said, 'Blessed are these women of Braj, who despite being illiterate and ordinary, are deeply in love with Krishna that is unrivalled by any saints and wise ones. Indeed, only these Gopis know the true nature and mystery of Shyam Sundar.  We are fortunate that we came in contact with them and learnt the nature of transcendental and divine love.'

Sri Krishna's dance of Love (Ras-leela)

God's actions or play/amusement has two elements: of magnificence (ashvarya) and congeniality (madhurya). The Unborn takes birth to fulfil the wishes of His devotees by His magnificence. The forms of His splendour are His incarnations of Matsya (fish), Kacchhap(tortoise), Varaah (boar), and Narsinh (half man-half lion). And the Forms that exemplify His congeniality or affability where He obeys parents and teachers and act according to the wishes of the devotees are of Sri Ram and Sri Krishna.

Srimad Bhagvat puran is the main text to help us understand the secret of Sri Krishna's ras-leela. The meaning of Srimad Bhagvad becomes progressively clear as the love of devotee increases. This too depends on the power of Lord's grace. It is very difficult to understand the enigma of Ras leela with ordinary, material intellect. Even the Supreme yogi Shiva could not understand it as he had to take the form of Gopishvar in Vrindavan. Shiva had burned the god of love, Manmath in anger, and the god of love could not even touch Sri Krishna in the midst of so many beautiful women of Braj. The od of love himself got ensnared by the attractive form of Krishna. After that Sri Krishna came to be called Madan Mohan.

In fact, it is difficult to understand Ras-leela without having a complete victory over physical form of love. In the entire universe, only Krishna is that who has won the god of physical love. Only one who has God's grace can understand Ras-leela.

In a clear full moon-lit night of autumn, Sri Krishna danced with gopis to fulfil their wish. This is called Ras-leela. When a group of nymphs dance together in a circle is called the raas. With the presence of one Krishna in the middle of two Gopis, made the Gopis feel so close to their Kanha. Hence they all danced in a circle. Raas means emotions or feelings in other words. रसानां समूहः रासम meaning there was not one Ras but group of Rasa. Therefore, in Raas, there is compassion, beauty, bravery, love, mirth, disgust, horror, and wonder (nav ras or nine emotions). Of these, Sringar or Love/ attractiveness is the essentail ras of Braj. Under the influence of circumstances, we go through such emotions. In short, the experience of the Blissful nature of Sri Krishna is the true meaning of Raas leela.

Lord Krishna is the lead character of Raas leela and Sri Radhika is the heroine, whereas all the Gopis were only the luminous force in the form of goddesses, saints, married, unmarried, etc. Sri Radha was the divine force that made Raas leela happen.

It is said that the narrator of Srimad Bhagvat, Sri Sukdevji maharaj used to dwell as a parrot in the abode of Sri Radharani and have the blessing of seeing Radharani which is unattainable by the rarest of the saints and gods. This is the reason that there is not much mention of Radharani's name in the Bhagvad puran as if it was mentioned, Shukdevji was sure to go into trance by mere hearing or saying Her name, and it would not have been possible to complete its narration to Prikshit in one week. That is why he does not mention Radharani's name in Raas panchadhyayi (five chapters on Raas).  To explain why Shukdevji has not mentined Radha name, a supreme devotee of Brajras, Sri Vyas says:

परम धन राधा नाम आधार ।
जाहि स्याम मुरली में टेरत सुमिरत बारम्बार ॥
जंत्र मंत्र  औ वैद मन्त्र में सबै तार को तार ।
श्री शुकदेव प्रकट नहिं भाख्यो जानि सार को सार ।
कोटिक रूप धरे नंद नंदन तउ न पायो पार ।
'व्यासदास' अब प्रकट बखानत डारि भार में भार ॥

If the Lord of the universe takes a form and amuses Himself to grant the wishes of devotees and grace them then it is His greatness.

Encountering the Infinite!

Whether one follows the path of knowledge or that of devotion, a constant, undivided attention or focus results in encountering the subject of devotion or search.

Who will not be overwhelmed to attain their desired goal?  Who will not get ecstatic and at peace to have something that they were waiting for a long time? Happiness is the only goal of every living being on this planet. Everyone has a  predisposition towards attaining to that state of bliss or happiness. However, only a rare one achieves that state of absolute blissfulness. Although we all experience pleasure and happiness in different ways, but these are only short lived and only lead to pain and sadness in the end. Until and unless we give a thought to our ultimate goal and the nature of true happiness, we cannot be at peace. Our outward tendencies lead us to find happiness in sensual gratification. Those who are hermits, saints and those dedicated to family life, find true happiness by using their ability to discriminate between true and transitory joy and by associating with those on a spiritual path. Therefore, they follow the path of knowledge and devotion or love. When on their path their goal is achieved, they experience true bliss.

Meerabai's dearest goal was her Giridhar Gopal. She was dedicated to her goal throughout her life and in the end her Shyam had to respond to her love and she merged with Him at the end of her life. When after having stared at the sun for a long time, we cannot see clearly in the dark, similarly, Meerabai used to see only Sri Krishna, being always absorbed in her love for Him. Being thus lost in her devotion for Him, sometimes she would actually meet her Lord.  Divine poetry then would break out from her and she used to describe these encounters in vivid, edifying songs. She described her beloved's make-up, eyes, His beauteous aspect, beau and tripartite walk and extraordinary virtues.

The following verses of Meera convey these blessed meetings with her Krishna, the source of Bliss. We may find slivers of peace and happiness in the material world, but all these pleasures are only a shadow or mere reflection of the true and absolute bliss that is found in meditating upon God, associating with devotees, remembering Him, singing His virtues, surrendering our desires, actions and thoughts to Him, and ultimately meeting Him. After having trying a whole lifetime in vain to have peace and happiness by following different courses of action, ultimately we have to seek His shelter. When mind withdraws from the outside world, it experiences true happiness within by meditating on the higher order of life. One experiences and meets the Absolute, either in dreams or in meditation, in their desired form. It is extremely fortunate to attain this true objective of human life. Meera was the supreme proprietress of this Blissful meeting.

To have an audience with God is the ultimate ecstatic experience that renders all the objects and experiences of this world meaningless and non-existent. Whoever has drunk the nectar of His countenance, only wants more and more of it and wishes to see only Him. Meera forgets herself in her ecstasy. Once Shyam accepts your love, He never leaves you.

Attachment to the Form

1.
Mother, I have a mental image of my Man-Mohan
As soon as the veil falls off
the two lights merge.
What is the point of regretting now
I am caught in Love's trap
Meera's Lord is Giridhar Nagar
the drop is merged with the Drop.

2.

My eyes don't listen to me,
they only like to see
that eternally youthful and dark Form
His feet are decorated with colour,
and the sweet flute cover the lips.
Despite my friends' warnings,
I cannot keep my eyes away from
that beauteous face.
Think what you will, good or bad
I accept it.
Meera is Giridhar's servant
He is her Lord and lover.

Cordial Dialogues

                  srimadbhagvat 11-14-24

One whose voice is full of devotion, heart melts at my name, who repeatedly calls out my name crying, who cries and laughs incessantly, and sometimes starts dancing without any shame, and who sings my praises, such a devotee not only purifies himself, but sanctifies the whole world through his speech and presence.

******

When there is a surge of a particular emotion, one cannot control oneself. It becomes difficult to express those feelings in words.  This is what a devotional dialogue is about. In such a state one loses the power of thought. If one is pining away in the absence of one's beloved then one starts talking of anguish and dejection, and if one is His presence,  the dialogue becomes congenial. And if these monologues or dialogues increase in intensity, then they take the form of ecstasy.

In this section, those verses are taken where Meera sings under the sway of these emotions of intense love and extreme anguish.

Prior arrangement

1.

O' mother! I have valued my Govindo.

Some say he is light and some say heavy
I have weighed Him using scales.

Some say He is dear and some say cheap
I have got Him at a charge beyond price.

Some say He is manifest and some concealed
I found Him in broad daylight.

Some say you can find Him at home
and some say through departing to the woods.
I  found Him playing with Radha.

Meera is her Giridhar Nagar's
due to His vow from a past life.

Listen to the divine rendition of the above verse by MS Subbulakshami.

2.

O' Mind, let's go to the banks of Ganga-Yamuna.
The pure waters of Ganga-Yamuna, calms the mind and body.
Where Kanha plays flute, together with Balbir,
wearing a peacock-feathered crown and yellow attire
with beautiful curls falling on each side.
Meera's Lord is Giridhar Nagar
she bows to His Lotus feet.

3.

Hari! do remember me sometimes!
I long for you and you don't even cast a glance.
You are very cruel.
All my desires and efforts lead towards you
nowhere else.
You may have millions following you
but for me You are the only One!
The night has passed thinking of you
and now the dawn is breaking.
O' Meera' lord, Giridhar Nagar!
I lay down my life for you.

4.

My friend! I am enchanted by His looks!
I have been waiting for ages
standing here on my balcony.
I can't seem to forget His attractive face
its lodged in my heart.
Meera is only her Giridhar's,
people say she is an eccentric.

 5.

O' fortune teller! tell me when will I see my Ram?
Come and read my fortune looking through your books.
I will give you five yards of Dakhni cloth
and give you a diamond cover for your texts.
and fine yellow robes and gems for your earring.

As many leaves (karma) fall from my tree
in those many days my Lord will see me.
When the winds (of devotion) are strong
all the leaves fall away, and
the Indistructible One shows up!

Meera's Lord is Giridhar Nagar,
She takes shelter in those Lotus feet.

6.

Krishna! Always be present before me.
I may be bad, Shyam, or may be good.
Good or bad, please live in my heart.
The path of love is very hard,
some say there are four veils (of ignorance),
and some say ten.
Meera says to her Giridhar Nagar,
if you profess to love Meera
you have to bear her taunts.

7.
Even if you break our bond, Krishna,
I won't ever break it.
Who can I love leaving you?
You are a tree and I am a bird.
You are a river and I am the fish.
You are the mountain, I the grass.
You are the pearls, and I am the thread.
You are gold, and I am the varnish.
Meera says her Lord is from Braj
He is her Lord and she is His servant.
